Tipping — the general rule
Europe tips far more modestly than the U.S. — round up the bill or add about 5–10% for good service. A service charge or cover charge (the coperto in Italy) is often already included, so check the bill before adding more. Tipping in cash is appreciated.

The Dutch are famously direct and frank — it is a cultural norm, not rudeness, and you can be straightforward back.
