Worth knowing

  • Pompeii was a Roman city buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. The ash sealed and preserved streets, houses, frescoes, and mosaics — and the voids left by victims, later cast in plaster.
  • Rediscovered in 1748, Pompeii is one of the world's most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • It is a large, open, sun-exposed site — bring water, sun protection, and good shoes.
  • Vesuvius is still an active volcano; the same eruption also buried nearby Herculaneum.
