Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and the home city of the Medici. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Duomo is crowned by Brunelleschi's Dome (completed 1436) — still the largest masonry dome in the world.
The Accademia's 'David' (1501–1504) is Michelangelo's 17-foot figure carved from a single block of Carrara marble.
Ponte Vecchio, lined with goldsmiths' shops, is the only Florence bridge the retreating German army left standing in 1944.
